Australian Alumni Showcase and Q&A on “The prevalence of round worm (Ascaris suum) in pigs in Timor-Leste”
Dr. Acacio Cardoso Amaral, President of Instiuto Politecnico Betano (IPB) and Professor at the Department of Animal Health and Animal Science at UNTL will present his research on the prevalence of round worm in Timor-Leste. Pigs are an important source of income for many rural households in Timor-Leste and research shows their numbers are increasing. However round worms in pigs can infect humans and human manure, which contains round worm, can infect pigs.
An expert in animal health, who led development of Timor-Leste’s animal health curriculum for the Ministry of Education, Dr. Amaral specialises in research into infectious diseases in animals, including those that can pass to humans. A prolific researcher and writer, he has published numerous papers on animal health and has edited the scientific journal Revista Cientifica Multidiciplinar da Sociedade Timorense since 2015.
Dr. Amaral held the potion of Vice President of the Veterinary Association from 2004 to 2011 and was nominated for an Australian Leadership Award in 2007.
