Selection stages

Scholarship applicants are selected via a rigorous and open process. Candidates must pass all seven selection stages to be offered a scholarship. To familiarise yourself with the selection process please watch our selection process explainer video.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong likelihood of succeeding in their studies and being able to contribute to the development of their country.

After taking a PELT test all candidates are notified by email of their result. Candidates that pass the PELT test cut off which is a minimum of score of 5.5 overall with no more than one score lower than 5.0, are assessed for the next shortlisting stage by an independent panel based on the Australia Awards selection criteria.

Candidates can re-schedule their interview, but only in exceptional circumstances. They must present a strong justification and the ability to accommodate the change will also be dependent on the panel’s availability.

Yes, you can change your course preferences after you have been selected for this scholarship. However, this must be done in consultation with the Australia Awards Course Advisor and must take account of your original course preferences.

Reserve candidates are high quality candidates who have been assessed as suitable for placement but have not been offered a scholarship. Every year the program identifies several reserve candidates. These reserve candidates may be offered a scholarship if a candidate who has been offered a scholarship decides to pull out, or if additional scholarship places are awarded.

Yes, candidates must  submit their official graduate certificate and transcript with their application.

For a list of the required documents please refer to the section  How to apply?

If your original graduate certificate and transcript are with other language then you are requiring translating the document to English. You may approach Institute National Linguistics (NIL) at UNTL compound for translation.

If you want your application to be considered for scholarship, when develop your supporting statement consider 3 main assessment criteria: Academic Competence, Your potential outcome, specifically the contribution to development and Professional and personal leadership attributes.

Achieving a higher IELTS score does not mean you will be awarded a scholarship. Scholarship applicants must progress through all seven selection processes, including achieving the IELTS score required for their study level.

Candidates can use their referee report from last year, but please make sure your referee report is uploaded using the new  Australia Awards read referee letter template .

When you have completed your studies you can join the Australia Timor-Leste Australia Alumni Association (TL3A). You will also be supported with a tailored reintegration workshop and can apply for the graduate internship and small grants program. About TL3A

The Timor-Leste Australia Alumni Association (TL3A) is open for any Timorese who have completed a recognised short or long term qualification in Australia. It was established by the Australia Award Scholarship Alumni in 2017 and legalised by the Ministry of Justice in October 2019.

The TL3A holds various activities including social events for networking, professional development, a Graduate Internship Program, a Small Grant Program, job placement support and an Alumni of the Year Award. Alumni Award

The Alumni of the Year award is an annual event to promote the achievements of specific Australia Awards Alumni and more generally to the public and to increase people’s interest in applying for an Australia Award Scholarship.

The Alumni of the Year Award will be given to the winner of nominations submitted by alumni to the secretariat during nomination period.

You need to complete a nomination form. When the nomination period is open the form will be provided online.

You can nominate up to two people for the award.

Call for alumni nomination is announced by Alumni Secretariat through email and announce on TL3A Facebook group.

Yes, alumni can nominate themselves with two supporting letters either both from alumni colleges or one from an alumni colleague and one from your employer.

Alumni Board

There are five board members including the President and Vice President. Board members are elected at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is held every two years.

To become a board member you need to be nominated by your alumni peers at the AGM. To be nominated you need to be an active member of the alumni association with good leadership skills.


Graduate Internship Program

The Graduate Internship Program (GIP) is a support program offered to a limited number of Australia Award Scholarship alumni who have recently graduated or who are experiencing difficulties finding a job relevant to their area of study.

To apply you need to download and complete the application form here and send the completed form to the Alumni Secretariat via alumni@australiaawardstl.org

The GIP program is a bridging program with an objective of linking alumni to institutions  related to their study areas to gain experience and to contribute their skills and knowledge gained from their study in Australia.

To be eligible you must be an Australia Award alumni who has either recently graduated or who is experiencing difficulties finding a job relevant to their area of study.

The Graduate Interns are working with Disabled Persons Organisations, Implementing partners, International NGOs, The Government of Timor-Leste and more. You can read more about their work and find out what they think about the GIP. You can also find out more by following the TL3A Facebook page.


Sector Group

There are a wide range of sector groups supporting community development. These include Agriculture, Development, Education, Health, Infrastructure, Media and Communication and lastly Sport sector group.

All Australian alumni are welcome to join one or more sector groups. They can also propose new sector groups to be agreed by the TL3A Board.

Small Grants

Yes, the TL3A has small grant fund allocated every year to support alumni activities that contribute to the development of the country.

Small grants are up to a maximum of $5,000. If you would like to apply please contact the Alumni Secretariat to request a copy of the small grant guidelines via alumni@australiaawardstl.org

All Australia Award Alumni can apply for a grant by sending a small grant proposal to Alumni Secretariat, when the grant applications are open.

The application period is announced on the TL3A facebook page and via email.

Inclusion

Inclusion

In the past certain groups have had less access to scholarship opportunities. These groups include people from the municipalities, people living with a disability and women. To ensure equality of opportunity the program proactively targets people from these groups to apply for scholarships. We also provide English language training to support them to build their English language skills.  

Scholarship applicants who completed their secondary school education outside the capital Dili are categorised as people from the municipalities, even if they are currently living in Dili.

Under Australian law, disability includes physical, intellectual, psychiatric, sensory, neurological, and learning disability, physical disfigurement, and the presence in the body of disease-causing organisms. More information on the Australian definition of disability and the rights of people with disability in Australia is available on DFATs website and the Australian Human Rights Commission’s website at

The program will encourage people with disability, who are otherwise eligible for an Australia Award, to apply by

i.ensuring applicants with disability are equally able to access the application and selection processes by providing reasonable adjustments and additional assistance.

  1. providing reasonable financial assistance to applicants with disability where this assistance is essential to facilitate their participation on an equal basis with other applicants; and

iii. consulting with the DFAT Disability Support Consultant (in Canberra) for expert advice on specific requirements.
