AUSTRALIA AWARDS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN TIMOR-LESTE
We are delighted to announce the newest Australia Awards scholarship recipients for the 2021 intake.
Since applications for Australia Awards Scholarships were introduced in Timor-Leste 20 years ago, 439 scholarships have been awarded to date. This year, thirteen talented women and men will get a life-changing opportunity to study at prestigious Australian universities.
These new awardees for 2021 will study subjects ranging from economics and cybersecurity, to education and nutrition, in support of the Government of Timor‑Leste’s National Development Priorities (2011-30) and Australia’s ‘Partnerships for Recovery’ strategy.
Thirty-three year old Awardee, Agostinho Araujo Pereira, from Dili, will study a Masters of Cybersecurity and is looking forward to developing his knowledge of information technology in Australia.
“I want to contribute skills to help develop the government’s ICT policy and regulations. Once I’ve completed my Masters, my goal is to return to Timor‑Leste to support economic recovery.”
Australian Ambassador, Peter Roberts OAM, said
“In this 20th anniversary year of our scholarships program, I’m especially delighted to congratulate the talented young men and women selected to study at universities across Australia.
The scholarship experience is so much more than developing new skills and contributing to Timor‑Leste’s future development, it’s also about building new and enduring friendships with Australians.”
On graduation, awardees will bring back new skills and knowledge that help support sustainable social and economic development, furthering Timor‑Leste’s recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.
Back home they will join a cohort of more than 334 Australia Awards Alumni, many of whom are now in influential leadership roles. And all of whom are using their skills, knowledge, and passion to improve Timor‑Leste’s future.
